1. Tofukuji Temple

Tofukuji Temple is known as one of Kyoto’s premier autumn foliage destinations. The view from the Tsutenkyo Bridge, where about 2,000 maple trees are planted, is particularly spectacular, spreading out like a red carpet.

From November 16 (Sat) to 30 (Sat), 7:30-8:30 AM, there’s an early morning exclusive viewing before general admission opens. Also, from November 16 (Sat) to December 1 (Sun), 5:30-7:30 PM, there’s a special nighttime exclusive viewing. This nighttime viewing includes the Tsutenkyo Bridge and Hojo Hall. 2. Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kiyomizu-dera Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, becomes even more enchanting during the autumn foliage season.

While the view of the autumn leaves from the Kiyomizu Stage is spectacular, the nighttime illumination is especially recommended. The autumn special night viewing is held from November 18 (Mon) to November 30 (Sat), 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM. No advance reservation is required. Experience the fantastical view of the temple grounds unique to night viewing, along with the crisp air.

3. Arashiyama (Togetsukyo Bridge)

Arashiyama is a representative tourist spot in Kyoto and is also famous for its autumn foliage. The contrast between the 155-meter-long Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River and the surrounding mountains dyed in autumn colors is truly picturesque.

4. Eikando Temple (Zenrinji)

Known as “Eikando of Maple Leaves,” Eikando Temple is adorned with about 3,000 maple trees throughout its grounds.

This year, to commemorate the 850th anniversary of Honen Shonin founding the Jodo sect, a “Special Temple Treasure Exhibition” is being held until December 8 (Sun). It mainly displays Pure Land Buddhist paintings and works related to Honen Shonin from the Zenrinji collection. Furthermore, nighttime illumination will be held until December 1 (Sun), allowing visitors to enjoy different aspects of the autumn foliage during day and night.
